Marmot Pass '06,  Buckhorn Wilderness Area,  Jul 10, 2006 - Jul 11, 2006     page 1 / 48

Dad and I visited Marmot Pass while on a mid-September visit to Buckhorn Lake last year. The area was outstanding, so I returned to explore and climb. Rather than approach from the north via Copper Creek, as we had done before, I chose the shorter, though steeper, approach via the Big Quilcene river. The trailhead sits at the end of the road at Ten Mile shelter, elevation 2466'. The logging road was extended many years ago providing shorter access to Marmot Pass without requiring a multiple day trip to get there. The trail begins with a comfortable grade in a lush forest. The Big Quilcene river can be seen from time to time and heard roaring constantly.
